We decided to immortalise some of the unsung heroes of Nottingham City Center using CG bronze and our slightly warped sense of where The Line is.

Shot in one day, we took reference photospheres to help with lighting.

We decided on an old VHS look to complement the 5D footage.

We based the look of the shader on reference collected around Nottingham. Unfortunately none of the real statues had anything like the same look - they were all different ages and made using different sculpting methods.

The solution was to amalgamate all the different looks into one shader that had controls for wear, weathering and artifacts from the casting process.

Scale became an issue when looking at some of the larger statues, as the detail became difficult to pick out, which meant I had to look at other options. I was able to use a custom vertex map to mix between several textures, particularly at the edges where the procedural shaders needed a little extra help.
